If you’re not planning on booking a charter or guide for your Alaska Fishing Trip, you’re obviously going to need equipment if you plan on catching any fish. For King Salmon, your equipment can mean the difference between landing a monster fish or seeing a cheap rod and reel snap as you try to reel in the day’s bounty. The good news is that with–> a little research you can make sure that your rod and reel will stand up to any test a fish may throw at it.
As a general rule of thumb, for King Salmon you need an eight foot long heavy fishing pole, preferably one designed to catch fish between 20 and 50 pounds. Even if you only end up reeling in a smaller 10 or 15 pound Chinook, there’s nothing worse than hooking a huge fish only to see it get off the line because of a weak rod. If you’re planning on bank fishing, you will also want a longer rod to give yourself more casting distance. Consider getting a low-profile surf casting rod. If there’s salt-water fishing in your plans, make sure you also buy a rod designed for salt water. You can also use it in fresh water but it has a special coating over it to prevent corrosion in the salty sea breeze. Just make sure to thoroughly clean your equipment after your day at sea.
If you plan on fishing for more salmon than just kings, choosing a rod becomes a little more difficult. You will want one with a mixture of characteristics. It needs to be flexible enough to be able to handle jumping silver salmon, but also strong enough to still be able to reel in a king salmon. Essentially the rod needs to be maneuverable and have a decent amount of play in the tip while also retaining some strength. Graphite steel rods are the best at this, but bamboo rods are another cheap, popular option.
Your reel should also be able to handle fish between 20 and 50 pounds. It should also be able to handle salt water if you’re planning on fishing from a boat or the beach. Finally, the reel should be capable of sustaining long runs, especially for kings.
It may take a little bit of research and shopping around, but having the right equipment is just as important as choosing your fishing hole and bait. Make sure you put in the time and effort now to choose a strong, dependable rod and reel now so you don’t have to worry about it on your trip and can instead focus on catching fish.
